HOME INVASION BURGLARY
This scam is a favorite
of the Gypsies. (The term, "Gypsies," as used here, refers to the
criminal element within the Romani society. More specifically,
organized criminal groups who refer to themselves as "Gypsies." The
players are always males. Group size varies from between two and five
suspects.
Elderly homeowners are
always the main target.
Suspects pose as utility company employees, and/or
home repair contractors. Entry into the victim's home is gained by
using a variety of misrepresentations. Once inside, one suspect
diverts the victim's attention while accomplices search for and take
money and jewelry.
Although listed as a ruse entry scam, these
offenses should be charged as burglaries. The "consent element" is
addressed when noting that the suspects gain entry to their victim's
home through misrepresentation. In other words, a fraudulent entry
equals non-consent.
Misplaced Blame
All too often, the elderly victim's family wrongly
places culpability for this crime on them. "They should not have let
these people in the house," is a common belief that leads to the
assumption that the elderly person is somehow incapable of living
alone. But for a very few cases, this belief is wrong and can lead to
harmful consequences.
Entry By Any Means
Having investigated
numerous Gypsy burglary cases, I can assure you that these thieves
will get into the home regardless of any steps the homeowner might
take to deny such entry. In fact, some savvy homeowners were
physically assaulted during such attempts. If confronted with such a group, your
safest action would be to leave your home and go to a neighbor and call police.
The property taken by these thieves can be replaced---but your health can't.
Nosey Neighbors Wanted
What it takes to defeat such thieves are nosey
neighbors. If you observe suspicious persons in your area, or suspect something
just isn't right, then call the police. Look closely at suspicious persons so
you can later provide officers with a description of them. Obtain vehicle
license numbers and as many other details as you can. It's also a good idea to
document this information so you won't forget anything.
